About
I have been a Senior Lecturer in Defence and International Affairs at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst since 2008.
My research interests span terrorism and insurgency, peace-building and conflict resolution, and strategic theory.
My latest book 'Defending the Realm? The Politics of Britain's Small Wars since 1945', is due to be published by Manchester University Press in 2012. The book is a strategic history of Britain's military interventions in Palestine, Malaya, Kenya, Cyprus, Aden, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. While it details some of the tactical and operational dynamics underpinning how Britain fought these small wars, it is much more concerned with the wider strategic and political context within which they have been conducted. One of my main interests is in the nature of civil-military relations and the 'strategy' by which Britain has sought to combat its irregular adversaries since 1945.
I am currently working on two books, one on 'British Grand Strategy and the End of Empire' and another on 'Strategy'.
Other teaching and research interests include the role of intelligence in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism, the utility of military power in combatting terrorism and Islamist extremism in the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa.
